The protagonist of this dance-drama is Kannagi, played by Vidhya Subramanian, who is married to Kovalan, played by Sumana Srinivasan. They share an idyllic life until Kovalan gets infatuated by a dancer Madhavi.
He gradually spends all his wealth on the dancer. At last, penniless, he returns repentantly to his uncomplaining wife. Their only fortune is a pair of Kannagi's gold and jeweled anklets. Kovalan hopes to sell them and invest the capital in a business to recover his fortunes. Kovalan approaches a jeweler, played by Kavita Radhakrishnan to sell one of Kannagi's anklets. In the mean time, the queen of the town, had just been robbed of a similar anklet. The jeweler happened to see Kovalan with Kannagi's anklet, and immediately seized it and informed the King, played by Kanchana Venkat. Guards were sent to apprehend Kovalan, who was then killed on the King's orders. When the news was brought to Kannagi, she goes to the king, her eyes ablaze with anger, carrying the other anklet in her hand as proof of her husband's innocence
